class=\"c-history__year\">1839 &#8211; 1983<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__left\">\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1839<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">French physicist Alexandre-Edmond Becquerel discovered the \u201cphotovoltaic effect\u201d, the basic principle of the solar cell.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1954<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Bell Laboratories, USA invented a p-n junction crystalline silicon solar cell.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1973<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Due to the first oil crisis, expectations for new and renewable energy, as an energy source other than oil for energy conversion increased.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1974<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Agency of Industrial Science and Technology of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) (current National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, (AIST)) started the \u201cNew Sunshine Project (R&amp;D project on new and renewable energy technologies)\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1978<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Due to the second oil crisis, a sense of crisis over stable energy supply and the necessity to respond to environmental issues increased once again.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1980<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">The New Energy Development Organization (current New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)) was established as a pioneer of new and renewable energy development triggered by the two oil crises in the 1970s.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__right\">\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1954<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Osamu Ikki, founder of RTS Corporation, was born, concurrently with the invention of solar cell.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1980<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Witnessing the oil crises and the following development of alternative energy in Japan, Osamu Ikki considered of silicon as an \u201cenergy resource\u201d instead of an \u201celectronics material,\u201d and focused on the future potential of PV power generation<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__event\">\n<div class=\"c-history__title\">1981<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-history__text\">Osamu Ikki appealed to NEDO the importance of silicon feedstock and that by manufacturing solar cells, PV will become one of the
